| Learning "about" things does not enable students to acquire the abilities and understanding they will need for the 21st century. We need new pedagogies of engagement that will turn out the kinds of resourceful, engaged workers and citizens that America now requires. | ||

White Paper by Russell Edgerton
|
In "Pedagogies of Engagement: Classroom-Based Practices," Smith et al. attribute to Russ Edgerton (in the above white paper) the phrase that serves as the title of this symposium. At the University of Delaware, our primary pedagogy of engagement is problem-based learning.. The basic principle behind PBL is that learning is initiated by a posed problem, query, or puzzle that the learner wants to solve. In the problem-based approach, complex, real world problems or cases are used to motivate students to identify and research concepts and principles they need to know in order to progress through the problems. Students work in small learning teams, bringing together collective skill at acquiring, communicating, and integrating information in a process of inquiry.
With this symposium, we bring together experts in student engagement and assessment of learning, invited to present on a wide range of topics. Plenary sessions include "Writing for Student Engagement", "Engaging Students: Influence on Student Learning", and "Engagement through Collaboration and Assessment". Participants invited from off-campus include Paul Anderson (Miami University), Edward Deckard (North Dakota State University), and Philip Cottell (Miami University). In addition, UD faculty members from the College of Business and Economics, Guido Geerts, Winnie Scott, and Mark Serva, will present a plenary session on "Engaging Students through Emerging Technologies."
Also included in this symposium will be a demonstration of problem-based learning (PBL) and modeling of ways that PBL can be used effectively in undergraduate education. One track of this program will focus on an introduction to PBL and another will serve to help participants take PBL 'to the next level'. A final afternoon session will concentrate on writing effective problem-based materials; participants will leave the session with newly minted problem scenarios or freshly revised problems for use in their couses. PBL workshops will be facilitated by ITUE leaders Deborah Allen, Steve Bernhardt, Susan Groh, George Watson, and Hal White.
This workshop is sponsored by the Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education and is open to all members of the UD faculty. Graduate students are also welcome to participate; preference will be given to students mentored by faculty members who are ITUE Fellows or are attending this session.
Faculty members from other colleges and universities are invited to attend this workshop. Visiting faculty teams are limited to five from each institution. Registration cost is $350/ person which includes instruction, materials, and refreshment breaks. Participants are responsible for their own transportation, meals, and accommodations; you may refer to an online Visitor's Guide for information. Shuttle service will be available between the hotel and the meeting room; pickup will be at 8:15am.
