ITUE Symposium:
Pedagogies of Engagement
Biosketches of invited presenters
Paul Anderson, Director,
Center for Writing Excellence, and Professor of English, Miami University
(Ohio), is a well-known teacher of writing, frequent workshop presenter, and
author of a widely used textbook in technical communication, now in its fifth
edition. He is a Fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Communication,
the Society for Technical Communication, and Miami's Institute of Environmental
Sciences. Dr. Anderson has served on Miami's Assessment Task Force and as
an Assessment Fellow. He chaired the Accreditation Steering Committee during
Miami's recent decennial reaccreditation review by the North Central Association
of Colleges and Schools.

Philip Cottell,
Professor of Accountancy at the Richard T. Farmer School of Business, Miami University, has served as Coordinator of Miami University’s Faculty Learning Community for Problem Based Learning. He has published numerous articles on college teaching including ones on Cooperative Learning and Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs). He conducts workshops on Cooperative Learning and Classroom Assessment at conferences and college and university campuses across the country. Dr. Cottell and Barbara Millis are the authors of Cooperative Learning for Higher Education Faculty (ORYX Press).

Edward Deckard, Professor in Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University, enhances student learning through advanced technologies and student-centered strategies in several courses, including a Plant Sciences course that is heavily based on problem based learning strategies. He has received several teaching awards including the 2005 Peltier Award for Innovative Teaching, 2005 Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology, 2004 National Case Study of 12 Exemplary Teachers, 2001 Robert Odney Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the 2001 Blue Key Distinguished Educator Award. He earned his bachelor's degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and his doctorate from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. In addition to his regular teaching and research, he is currently serving as the Interim Associate VP of Academic Affairs.
