Faculty Responses to ITUE/PRESENT partnership

Sample 1. Faculty describe motivation to participate

"I was returning to teaching after a 10 year hiatus and wanted to learn more about using technology in the classroom."
Margaret L. Andersen, ITUE fellow in Sociology

"Increasing my knowledge of teaching and technology uses in the classroom."
Karen Bauer, ITUE Fellow in Psychology and Women's Studies

"There were two reasons. First, a genuine desire to improve my teaching and to use resources that I knew would enable me to better communicate with students. ....The second reason was perhaps less noble but still important. The National Science Foundation has a new emphasis on teaching and outreach, and in order to improve my chances of obtaining NSF research funding I wanted to formulate a plan for improving my teaching. The ITUE program was instrumental in helping me to formulate such a teaching plan.  I was fortunate enough to receive a NSF Career Award in 2000, due in part to the teaching plan I proposed."
Paul Imhoff, ITUE fellow in Civil and Environmental Engineering

"Interest in improving my teaching (ITUE and PRESENT) and improving the development of my multimedia materials for teaching (PRESENT)."
Larry Peterson, ITUE Fellow in Music

Sample 2. Faculty describe benefits of the partnership

"The ITUE program got me started using online class materials--such as a syllabus and other "hand-outs" that traditionally were photocopied or placed on reserve.  The PRESENT was absolutely indispensable in taking me from the starting stages into what is now routine and fairly comprehensive integration into my courses of web materials and other forms of technology to improve teaching."
James Magee, ITUE Fellow in Political Science and International Relations

"ITUE provided the motivation and the grant to purchase a laptop that I used to work on my textile project away from my office during the summer months.  The Present provided the technical assistance to capture my ideas."
Rosetta LaFleur, ITUE Fellow in Consumer Studies

"With the combination of ITUE and PRESENT I've been able to use PBL in combination with new technologies.

ITUE alone, especially where technology applications are demonstrated, would be less effective without the direct help that PRESENT can provide faculty in how to undertake the kinds of projects we see demonstrated.  And a strength of PRESENT, which is perhaps partially due to it's partnership with ITUE, is that the staff there don't just show faculty how to use technology, but can really help us in figuring out how to use the technology for educational enhancement.

I might not have thought to go over to PRESENT and ask for help if not for having met their staff through the ITUE workshops."
Chandra Reedy, ITUE fellow in Museum Studies

"I have felt that things introduced in ITUE could be pursued using the PRESENT as a resource."
Jane Noble-Harvey, ITUE Fellow in Biological Sciences

Sample 3. Faculty response to ITUE/PRESENT Faculty Showcase

"It was most interesting to me to see how many different ways of implementation of PBL or interactive learning techniques there are. Also, it was helpful to know that PRESENT supported so many kinds of projects. Projects that faculty had developed with ideas and learned to implement with the support and assistance of very knowledgeable staff.”
Yda Schreuder, ITUE Fellow in Geography

"The most helpful aspect was learning how various faculty are combining technology and PBL."
Betsy Lieux, ITUE Fellow in Nutrition and Dietetics

"It was very important to see what others had developed, and to get a realistic estimation of the time it took to create."
Kathy Denhardt, Policy Scientist, Institute for Public Administration

Solicitation of Faculty Feedback

Items 1 and 2 above were selected from 31 responses received from 85 ITUE Fellows who had visited PRESENT and worked with the staff at least once. They were e-mailed the following message:

We are evaluating the partnership between ITUE and PRESENT (includes consulting and technology training) for planning future programs. We
have identified you as someone who has participated in programs offered by both units. Please take a few moments to respond to these questions:

  1. What motivated you to participate in both ITUE and PRESENT programs?
  2. How have you benefited from the partnership of ITUE and PRESENT?
  3. What future programs about PBL and technology would appeal to you?

Comments in Item 3 above were selected from program evaluation forms completed at the conclusion of a recent faculty showcase.
