Preconference Workshop at EDUCAUSE 2000

Case Study Part II
If it wasn't for the last minute panic, nothing would ever get done...

Activity 1: Take 5 minutes to read the case.

Pulling several sheets of paper from his desk, President Fixitnow pushed them across to the new director of the Learning Center. As he did so, Prof. Whinesome observed, "The students are quite up in arms about this matter as you can see from the signatures on these recent petitions. And some of the faculty are starting to grumble too; what are you going to do about it?"

"Let's say I can come up with another 50k more annually," offered Provost Nolira, "how many professors can you train?"

Dr. Knowsabit continued staring at the floor. "So the real question is: can I affect institutional change in the way we teach with the equivalent of one faculty line? We already know the seven principles for good practice in undergraduate education and how to use technology to leverage best practice. We put on a retreat last year that served as a catalyst for launching the new technology center. But then we struggled with inadequate staffing for on-going technical support that was needed as a result." After a pause to catch her breath, she inquired "How much time do I have?" with just a hint of amused resignation in her voice.

"I would like to report to the students that we will have taken the necessary action by the start of next academic year," came the reply. "I have formed a committee which you will chair and I need a report by the end of next month..."

The following week, Dr. Knowsabit met in a small conference room in Hallowed Hall with Prof. Whinesome, Ms. Wizard, the director of Instructional Technology, Dr. Grants, a well-respected scholar, and Mr. Gladsome, student member of the Board of Trustees. She started the meeting by listing a few questions on the board for consideration. Before they could begin discussing their task, the Provost stopped in for a quick introduction...

Activity 2: Identify an individual in your group for each stakeholder above. These are:
Nolira upper administration
Whinesome faculty leader, president of the faculty senate
Knowsabit learning center director
Wizard instructional technology director, responsible for distance learning
Grants typical faculty member
Gladsome intense undergraduate leader
