The basic principle supporting the concept of problem-based instruction is older than formal education itself, namely that learning is initiated by a posed problem, query, or puzzle that the learner wants to solve. In the problem-based approach, complex, real world problems or cases are used to motivate students to identify and research concepts and principles they need to know in order to progress through the problems. Students work in small learning teams, bringing together collective skill at acquiring, communicating, and integrating information in a process that resembles that of inquiry.

This five-day workshop will demonstrate problem-based learning (PBL) and model ways that PBL can be used effectively in all disciplines, in upper and lower division courses, and in all size classes. Participants will learn how to integrate Internet resources into their courses and use technology effectively in active, group-based learning.

Morning sessions will focus on effective ways of using problem-based instruction and developing materials and problems appropriate for use in groups. In the afternoon sessions, participants will have the opportunity to develop their skills in using Internet resources in their courses.

This workshop is sponsored by the Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Mathematics & Science Education Resource Center and is open to all UD faculty.

A limited number of faculty from other colleges and universities are invited to attend this five day workshop. Visiting faculty are limited to five from each institution. Registration cost is $425/ person which includes instruction, materials, and refreshment breaks. Participants are responible for their own transportation, meals, and accommodations; you may refer to an online Visitor's Guide for information. A block of rooms are being held at the Sleep Inn at a reduced rate for this workshop.
