Early Childhood Education
The major in Early Childhood
Education (ECE) is designed for students
who plan to work with young children in
school, family and institutional settings.
All graduates from the program will be endorsed
for certification in Early Care and Education
(Birth to 2nd grade) and Early Childhood
Special Education, which allows students
to pursue careers as teachers and early
interventionists. The program's developmental
emphasis teaches students how to match instructional
strategies and materials to children's social-psychological,
cognitive and physical maturity. The program
further emphasizes the family's role in
caring for and socializing children.
The Early Childhood Education
major has been recognized by the National
Association for the Education of Young Children
as meeting their highest standards. Most
early childhood courses have a field experience
to go along with classroom learning. You
can become certified in Delaware to teach
Birth - 2nd grade and Early Childhood Special
Education. If you plan to work outside of
Delaware, these certifications are reciprocal
with many other states. (see the University's
Teacher
Education program for details)
