Degree Programs > Career opportunities for HDFS Majors

Early Childhood Education majors
Employment opportunities vary according to one's certification(s). The State of Delaware is starting a new procedure for applying for teacher certification. As of June 1, 2003, you must apply online from the Department of Education's website.

Certification - Early Childhood Education, Birth-Grade 2 Inclusive
Graduates are prepared to teach young children of all ages and disabilities (infants through grade 2) and find employment in a variety of early education settings including teaching in private or public schools, public kindergarten, in Head Start programs, nursery schools, and child care centers. They may also work in more general, social and/or health services including early intervention programs, programs for high risk children or home based programs for young special needs children. Students who pursue graduate work may go into a variety of academic programs such as early childhood education, special education, family studies, deaf education, or clinical psychology.

What types of jobs will the ECE Major lead to?

Human Services majors
Many Human Services (HS) graduates take entry-level social service positions. Their competition in the job market is the Bachelor of Social Work graduate. Some of the positions are: Child protective worker in a state agency; activities coordinator in a senior center; intake worker in a public housing agency; medical social worker; counselor in vocational rehabilitation service; caseworker for family court; social service director at a nursing home; child care worker at a residential psychiatric unit; health educator; and Cooperative Extension Agent.

The HS major does not qualify a student to do professional counseling or therapy. Students wishing to pursue these interests are encouraged to earn advanced degrees, such as the M.S.W., Master's of Counseling, Community Psychology, or the M.S.S. (Master of Social Services granted by Bryn Mawr College).
