and Family Studies will be known as -
The Department of
Human Development and Family Studies.
effective July 1, 2008.
CHEP Scholarships Awarded. Three students from the Department of Human Development and Family Studies have been awarded CHEP Scholarships for Summer 2008. Caitlin Bailey and Alyson Cavanaugh will be working on research with Dr. Chris Ohannessian. Lamar Gibson will be working with Dr. Ruth Fleury-Steiner and Dr. Nyasha Grayman.

Congratulations to the award recipients of the Steele Symposium held on Thursday, May 8, 2008. Twenty-one posters and papers were submitted to the symposium. The award winners are listed below. Congratulations to all of the participants on your scholarly work and professional presentations!
Graduate Paper Awardee:
1st Place: Amanda Rich, Department of Individual and Family Studies, for her paper "Sexual Violence Against People With Disabilities: A Feminist and Ecological Systems Approach";
Undergraduate Paper Awardees:
1st Place: Theodora M. Pandelidis, Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies, for her paper, "Evidence of Social Responsibility: A Content Analysis of Three Retail Corporation Websites;
2nd Place: Emily Manz, Department of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, for her paper "Teacher Retention in America's Urban Communities";
Graduate Poster Awardee:
1st Place: Kelly Yannetta, Department of Individual and Family Studies, for her poster "Parental Limit Setting Moderates Adolescent Paid Work and Alcohol Use";
Undergraduate Poster Awardees:
1st Place: Danielle Norris, Department of Individual and Family Studies, for her poster "Strange Love: Rewards of Helping Strangers in Need According to Black Americans";
2nd Place: Christine Yacyshyn, Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies, for her poster "The Loss of Cultural Formality in Higher Education"
Elizabeth (Liz) Dale, Danielle Norris, and Lilianah Shabo, all Human Services majors, presented posters at the 2008 Scholars Poster Session in Trabant University Center on Friday, May 2, 2008 from 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. The students presented research they conducted during the Summer of 2007 and throughout the 2007-2008 academic year. Thanks to Dr. Bahira Sherif Trask and Dr. Nyasha Grayman for sponsoring the students.
Congratulations to the following Department undergraduates: Andrea Fusaro, Hilda Moradel, Katye Marie Murphy, Caitlin O'Donnell, Maria Constanza Pizano, Erica Geraldo Rojas, and Natalie Villoslada. These early childhood education and human services majors were recognized at the Latino/Latina Students of Distinction on Saturday afternoon, April 26th for achieving grade point averages of at least 3.30.
Congratulations to Suzanne Milbourne and Tara Woolfolk for receiving the Sussman Price for 2006 at the ceremony held on Thursday, August 10, 2008. Suzanne Milbourne won for her dissertation "The Effect of Ambient Working Conditions on Teacher-Child Interactions and Teacher Stress and Wellness". Tara Woolfolk won for her dissertation "A Qualitative Exploration of Program Satisfaction and Fit Among African-American Mothers in the Parents as Teachers Program: One Size Does Not Fit All."
Congratulations to John Bishop for receiving the American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Diamond Award at their annual conference in Atlanta on Monday, March 31, 2008. Dr. Bishop was recognized for his long-standing service to ACPA and his impact on the field of higher education student affairs. Congratulations!
Dr. Loren Marks, IFST Ph.D. Alunmus 2002, has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at Louisiana State University.
Dr. Marks is in the School of Human Ecology, Division of Family, Child and Consumer Studies.
Dr. Marks has also recently won both research and teaching awards.
Congratulations to Courtney Fox (nee Farina), an Early Child Development and Education graduate from 1998, for being selected Delaware Teacher of the Year. Courtney is a kindergarten teacher at Mount Pleasant Elementary School in the Brandywine School District. Congratulations to Peg Bradley, who has accepted an appointment as director of both the Early Learning Center and the Laboratory Preschool. By overseeing the two units, Peg will help us make more effective use of the early childhood facilities in CHEP.
Congratulations to Dr. John Bishop, Professor in IFS. He is being awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2007 from Albright College for outstanding service and accomplishment. John accepted the award on Sunday, October 7th at Albright.
Congratulations to Michelle Knights, 2007 Ph.D. graduate in Human Development and Family Studies. She has accepted a one year appointment in the Department of Family and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown. Michelle will be teaching child development and parenting courses.
Ilka Riddle (nee' Pfister), 2006 Ph.D. graduate in Human Development and Family Studies and now a researcher at UD's Center for Disabilities Studies (CDS), lead the team that recently published the first comprehensive report about the health of adults with disabilities in Delaware. Dr. Riddle works with Dr. Jim Salt, a part-time instructor for IFST and researcher at CDS, UD's Center for Applied Demography and Survey Research, the Division of Developmental Disabilities Services and a team of data collectors and advocates from throughout the state.
