Statement by AAU, ACE, and NASULGC to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform regarding the impact of the new visa process on foreign travel to the U.S., July 10, 2003

Three major American educational organizations make recommendations to Virginia representative Tom Davis, Chairman of the Committee on Government Reform, for improving the Visa Mantis and Visa Condor security check systems including extending certain exceptions already given to individuals sponsored by the U.S. government to those not sponsored by the government. Concern is also expressed about changes to visa interview policies that will limit waivers of personal interviews. It is feared that visa delays of any type will become routine and that international scientists and scholars will be prevented from traveling to and from academic and scientific conferences in the U.S. and abroad. One result is the loss of the world’s best and brightest scientists to other countries, resulting in a compromise of American economic and national security.
