CREATING DEPARTMENTAL WEB PAGES

A department may choose to set up its own web server or to obtain a directory on UD's central web server. For information about web server software and hardware, contact the Technology Solutions Center. To obtain space on www.udel.edu, fill out the directory request web form. You will receive an e-mail message when the directory has been set up. Follow the instructions for publishing your web pages.

Web Advisory Group

Before a departmental page is approved for a link from the University's central web server, it should be reviewed by the University's Web Advisory Group. The committee, including staff from Public Relations, Information Technologies, and Publications, recognizes the tremendous outreach potential of University web pages and, therefore, reviews web documents and makes suggestions for improving them.

To request that the committee review information from your department, complete the Request for Web Site Review.

Departmental Responsibilities

Individual departments are responsible for creating and maintaining their own information, responding to inquiries about the information, and updating that information as necessary. To aid in this process, the Web Advisory Group recommends that each department make one person responsible for that department's information.

Many departments may find it more appropriate to have this individual coordinate that department's electronic publishing effort rather than doing it all himself or herself. Specifically, a department as a whole or the designated "coordinator" should:

  • Coordinate the gathering of information for Internet publication within the group.

  • Decide how the information will be organized.

  • Decide how often the information is going to change and how often it will be updated.

  • Prepare the information for display on the Internet by saving it in the appropriate file type.

  • Make certain that all departmental web documents are in compliance with copyright rules and with UD guidelines and policies.

  • Include e-mail links on the group's or department's web pages.

  • Verify that the department's or group's online information is up-to-date.

  • Have the site maintainer register with the Web Advisory Group.

  • Notify the Web Advisory Group when a department-level home page is ready for review by completing Request for Web Site Review.
