Summer Hockey League (Ages 10 & Under)

*Cross Ice and full ice games will be played during the summer.

What is Cross Ice Hockey?

Cross-Ice Hockey is specifically designed to provide fast results in the most enjoyable environment available. Cross-Ice Hockey is a system whereby skaters play the game along one-third of the width of the rink rather than the full length. The reduced playing area increases the players' need to move faster and gain better control of the puck, and the players recieve more touches of the puck than in a full-ice game. Teams consist of roughly eight players and participate in a 3-on-3 game lasting one hour.

Low player-to-coach ratios further guarantee instruction from our dedicated volunteer coaches. Games are played on both ends of the rink, and coaches are able to individually instruct those skaters not playing in the center ice area. Participants must have completed Hockey 2 or a comparable class to be eligible for Summer Hockey League.

Program Highlights:

The program will run from May 11, 2009 until August 3, 2009. There will be a total of 20 ice slots. Evals will be May 11, 2009, everyone makes a team. Season will include:

Four (4) Cross Ice Practice Slots, Six (6) Cross Ice Game Slots, Three (3) Clinic nights, Two (2) Full Ice Practice Slots, Three (3) Full Ice Game Slots as well as year end tournament/party on August 3, 2009.

The emphasis will be on FUN for all players while developing players' core hockey skills.

The cross ice games are played ACROSS the width of one zone. It is played 3 on 3 or 4 on 4 as opposed to 5 skaters a side. Goalies and referees will be used for the full ice game slots.

• » Full equipment is required Helmet with cage and mouthguard, shoulder & elbow pads, gloves, protective cup, hockey pants, shin guards, skates, stick & hockey socks.

• Through a partnership with the OneGoal Hockey organization, the University of Delaware Ice Arena is able to provide a full set of rental equipment, free of cost, to any family that is interested in participating in the Cross-Ice Hockey program. Please contact Jim Kaden (kaden@udel.edu)) to set up a time to come in for an equipment fitting and fill out the rental forms.
