FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under limited supervision, performs a variety of complex technical laboratory duties including the design and construction of test equipment. Supervises and trains personnel. The principal emphasis is on working independently and exercising personal initiative in conducting experiments and designing, modifying and installing complex laboratory systems and equipment. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Performs a variety of technical duties involved in conducting physical, electronic, chemical or biological tests, experiments and determinations to obtain data in support of research activities; * Sets up instrumentation; calibrates equipment and repairs equipment problems; * Procures and maintains material stock; * Designs and builds highly specialized electronic laboratory equipment and instrumentation; orients others to the use of this equipment (orally or in writing); * Helps to set and maintain proper laboratory safety standards; * Develops and modifies experimental procedures; * Assigns work for staff; * Trains new employees and graduate students; * Prepares tables, graphs and reports; * Performs other related duties as assigned. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: May be required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. SEDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and four years of experience in laboratory work in a relevant field as well as experience with the necessary physical, electronic and chemical systems. Supervisory experience preferred. Related progressive experience beyond a high school diploma or GED may be substituted for required education or additional related education may be substituted for required experience. Requires knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures and instrumentation; ability to read and interpret complex operations manuals, drawings and design, interpret problems and design equipment for the particular tasks, assume responsibility and take initiative to perform tasks, work independently, train and instruct others, and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Depending on assignment, the ability to routinely lift, with or without assistance, up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work above floor level or in pits may be required. Requires dexterity in handling delicate and/or hazardous materials. The ability to maintain a valid CDL A, B or C operator's license and/or State water well driller’s license may be required. In certain units, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
