FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under limited supervision, performs highly skilled, complex technical work on major electronic equipment or complex instrumentation for the research units within the department. Provides training and supervision to subordinates or students. The principal emphasis is on engineering, designing, constructing, maintaining and/or modifying precision research instruments and related apparatus. Requires familiarity with a broad range of sophisticated instruments and equipment and a high level of independent judgment to supervise a project. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical * Consults with outside design/engineering companies on design modifications to instruments, electronic equipment and computer interfaces; establishes the quality standards for the shop; * Performs engineering, design and construction or maintains and makes modifications to precision instruments; * Maintains current awareness of technological advances; * Supervises, plans and schedules work to meet deadlines; * Prepares schematics and/or drawings; * Performs precision electronic operations on computer-assisted electronic and conventional tools and measuring devices; * Solders or uses other forms of bonding to join materials; * Troubleshoots and repairs precision apparatus by determining the problem; purchases and installs parts and tests equipment for proper operation; * Maintains sufficient shop stock and inventory to properly support uninterrupted operation of the shop and the needs of the department; * Advises department chairperson, administrator or manager of electronic shop needs; * Prepares necessary records to ensure proper distribution of shop cost; * Assists students with projects or instructs students on the safe use of equipment; * Establishes and oversees safety standards in the use of equipment and other materials; * Performs other related duties as assigned. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of an Associate's degree in electronics with ten years of practical and supervisory experience. Requires extensive knowledge of research instrumentation and computer systems with ability to learn various instrumentation software applications; training and experience in electronic circuit design; knowledge of digital electronic interfacing; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. Knowledge of software design preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires the ability to visually color code wire, size conduit and troubleshoot related problems.
