MASTER MACHINIST (T8)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

NATURE OF JOB:
Under limited supervision, independently performs highly skilled machine support work for the research unit within the department. Provides training and supervision to subordinates and/or students. The principal emphasis is on engineering, designing, constructing and modifying precision research equipment. A high level of independent judgment is required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical examples of work:
 
* Performs engineering, designing and construction of precision equipment and apparatus and establishes the quality standards for this shop; 
* Supervises, plans and schedules work to meet deadlines; 
* Maintains current awareness of technological advances; 
* Prepares schematics and/or drawings; 
* Performs precision machining operations on computer-assisted electronic and conventional machinery and/or equipment such as drill press, lathe, milling machines and grinders as well as hand tools and sheet metal tools; 
* Welds, solders or uses other forms of bonding materials; 
* Constructs structures from steel, aluminum, polymers and composites in addition to special materials and other metals; 
* Troubleshoots and repairs precision apparatus by determining the problem, purchasing, machining or making needed parts, installing parts and testing equipment for proper operation; 
* Maintains sufficient shop inventory to properly support uninterrupted operation of the shop and the needs of the department; 
* Advises department chairperson, administrator of machine shop needs; 
* Prepares necessary records to ensure proper distribution of machine shop cost; 
* Assists students with projects by performing machine work or by giving classroom and/or machine shop instruction on the use of equipment and machines; 
* Establishes and oversees safety standards in the use of equipment and hand tools; 
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with more than ten years of machine shop experience; completion of standard trades school, technical training program or welding program; and journeyman status. Additional training in physics, chemistry or basic engineering preferred. Requires technical aptitude and comprehensive knowledge of machine tools, welding, shop math, precision measuring instruments, working properties of metals and plastics, and machine shop and stockroom operations; mechanical drawing skills; ability to perform design engineering and work independently from sketches, drawings or verbal instructions; ability to organize, assign and direct the work of others; ability to perform two or more levels of welding; competency in CNC machine operations and/or tool and die making skills; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. CAD familiarity or experience is beneficial.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. In certain positions, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
