MASTER  GLASS TECHNOLOGIST (T8)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

NATURE OF JOB:
Under limited supervision, performs highly skilled technical duties in the design, development, fabrication, repair and testing of scientific glassware products used in research and teaching laboratories. The principal emphasis is on working independently and exercising personal initiative in performing glassware and related operations. A high level of independent judgment is required in providing consultation services.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work:

* Designs, fabricates, repairs and tests glassware equipment and apparatus; 
* Performs consultation tasks regarding design, material, function and safety; 
* Files and maintains glass-shop inventory, designs, sketches or diagrams, technical work orders, vendor orders and other related forms; 
* Operates equipment related to glassware production and testing such as lathe, annealing oven, lapping machine, cut-off wheel, wet sander, torches, polariscope, vacuum pump and leak tester; 
* Instructs students and researchers in standard safety procedures for handling glassware and for operating glass apparatus systems; 
* Orders supplies as needed; meets with sales representatives; 
* Maintains safety precautions for work area; 
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to
prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and certification in scientific glass technology. Two semesters of college-level physics and/or chemistry preferred. Requires experience sufficient to qualify as a journeyman with a minimum of four years of experience in an industrial or research setting and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires dexterity in handling delicate and/or hazardous materials. Requires ability to routinely lift, with or without assistance, up to 30 pounds.
