FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under limited supervision, operates and follows power up and power down procedures for administrative, academic and instructional mainframe computers and associated peripherals running under various operating systems. The principal emphasis is on operating, monitoring and troubleshooting main frame systems and various subsystems using established guidelines and recording detailed information of status of all systems. Requires independent judgment for troubleshooting and problem resolution. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Monitors and troubleshoots operation of multiple mainframe systems and subsystems; contacts appropriate support personnel to escalate problem resolution; and documents detailed information on status of these systems; * Recommends changes in procedure or documentation to avoid problems from recurring; * Runs, monitors and verifies correct completion of production jobs using productive software tools to make adjustments to schedules or jobs as needed; * Operates peripheral equipment such as impact printer, laser printer, scanner, thermo-bond and burster; fixes minor problems when possible; * Starts up and shuts down software; * Backs up disk storage on all machines; * Powers up and down all systems; * Monitors machine room environmental systems and handles problems; * Communicates with Help Center personnel regarding user issues, handles instructions forwarded from Help Center (e.g., update v-mail message for problems occurring after hours); * Performs other related duties as assigned. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with four years of experience operating IBM and/or Sun mainframes using Unix or OS390 operating system or five to six years of experience on similar mainframes and operating systems. Requires experience setting up and maintaining printers, tape drives, thermo-bond and burster. Additional related education may be substituted for required experience. Requires knowledge of personal computer functions using a Windows environment, Netscape and Netscape mail; basic word processing skills; general mechanical aptitude; the ability to understand verbal or written instructions, document detail of events and communicate and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires the ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, computer equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, dexterity to set up, operate and troubleshoot computers and associated peripherals and ability to accurately align material for printing jobs.
