FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under general direction of the Chief Engineer, performs skilled work relating to the ship's main engines and auxiliary machinery. The principal emphasis is on diagnosing and repairing problems occurring in propulsion, electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems while at sea and performing preventive maintenance while alongside. Independent judgment and decision making are required. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Assumes the responsibilities of chief engineer when the Chief Engineer is not aboard; * Stands Engineering Watch while underway (six hours on/six hours off) either as Chief Engineer or Second Engineer; * Diagnoses and repairs electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems while at sea; * Performs and documents the maintenance and repair of all ship's machinery and ensures the adherence of appropriate maintenance schedules; * Operates winches, cranes, frames, and other deck machinery at sea and alongside; * Assists the scientific party with the deployment and recovery of equipment; * Assists with loading of equipment in preparation for a scientific cruise; * Performs other related duties as assigned. OCCUPATIONAL/ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES: The physical environment requires the employee to work exposed to all conditions found aboard a ship at sea. This includes heavy weather, extreme heat/cold, and all forms of precipitation. Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a high school diploma with successful completion of formal technical training in diesel engines, electric generating plant, or hydraulic systems and four years service in the engineering department on vessels propelled by diesel engines or more than 500 and less than 3000 horsepower. USCG Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) certificate is required within one year of employment. Must maintain certification in Marine Fire Fighting. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform normal duties aboard ship such as: ascending and descending ladders, handling mooring lines, opening and closing watertight doors, wearing an emergency breathing apparatus, reaching, handling, grasping, and lifting lifesaving and fire fighting equipment. Must meet the US Coast Guard (USCG) physical requirements for merchant seaman as outlined in 46 CFR and given on USCG Form CG-719K. Must be able to spend extended periods away from home port, as much as 2/3 of the ship's sailing schedule (approximately 140 days) for up to three weeks at a time. Must be sensitive to the scientific mission of the ship. Must pass a preemployment drug screening test and be willing to be enrolled in a Department of Transportation random drug testing program.
