FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under limited supervision, assists faculty members in the operation of classroom and/or departmental laboratory activities. The principal emphasis is on providing support and oversight for laboratory operations for an academic program. Independent judgment and thorough understanding of the application of scientific techniques are required. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Prepares experiments, assembles equipment, constructs and demonstrates use of apparatus; * Responds to student inquiries; * Maintains laboratory equipment which may include troubleshooting and making minor repairs; ensures equipment is in working order; * Maintains and controls inventories; initiates orders; receives, checks and stocks all orders of supplies and/or parts and equipment; * Coordinates delivery of equipment and supplies, including live specimens, to laboratories; * Keeps records and writes reports as required; * Observes and monitors students in general and research labs checking that good safety practices are followed; * Responsible for safety training and compliance; * Observes and monitors students in handling of toxic or corrosive materials; * Serves on committees; attends/conducts meetings as necessary; * Maintains cultures and cares for laboratory animals; * May design and write student experiments, lab manuals and syllabi; * Tests and modifies laboratory examinations; * Supervises other unit personnel; * Performs other related duties as assigned. ENVIRONMENTAL/ OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a field of science and one year of supervisory experience. Related progressive experience beyond a high school diploma or GED may be substituted for required education or additional related education may be substituted for required experience. Requires basic computer skills; knowledge of instructional methods; mechanical aptitude; familiarity with use of appropriate supplies, tools and equipment; and ability to follow oral and written instructions, work effectively with faculty members and students and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: With or without assistance, must be able to routinely up to 50 pounds. Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials and the ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials. May require a valid vehicle operator’s license and evening, weekend and holiday working hours. In certain units, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
