NATURE OF JOB:
Under limited supervision, operates the research vessel Cape Henlopen while at sea and assists with general maintenance and repairs on deck while in port. The principal emphasis is on the safe and effective operation and navigation of ship; independent judgment is required in evaluating and diagnosing problems, determining effective solutions and making skilled repairs and/or adjustments.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: 
Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical examples of work:

* Stands Deck Watch while underway (six hours on/six hours off);
* While on watch, responsible for the safe and effective operation/navigation of the ship; supervises all activities being conducted on deck; assists scientific party with the deployment and recovery of equipment;
* Operates deck machinery such as winches, capstans, frames and crane; maintains familiarity with all engine room equipment and systems; 
* Directs and/or assists with the loading of equipment in preparation for a scientific cruise;
* Assists with general maintenance and repairs on deck as needed;
* Assists with the general cleaning and upkeep of the labs and deck spaces;
* Maintains ship's boat Zodiac;
* Maintains inventories of all deck hardware and supplies and  ship's medical locker and assists in administering the Random Drug Testing Program;
* Performs other related duties.

OCCUPATIONAL/ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES:
The physical environment requires the employee to work exposed to all conditions found aboard a ship at sea.  This includes heavy weather, extreme heat/cold and all forms of precipitation. Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and  considerable experience with deck operations, deck safety and seamanship. Three years' sea experience in fishing or towing industry preferred. Requires good ship-handling skills in close quarters as well as familiarity with the deployment and recovery of equipment at sea; knowledge of all aspects of standing a bridge watch including navigation, Rules of the Road, communications procedures, and the operation of modern marine electronics; knowledge in the operation and maintenance of deck machinery; sensitivity to the scientific mission of the ship; and the ability to interact well and communicate effectively with the scientific party and people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform normal duties aboard ship: ascending and descending ladders; handling mooring lines; opening and closing watertight doors; wearing an emergency breathing apparatus;  reaching, handling, grasping and lifting lifesaving and fire fighting equipment, etc. Must meet the US Coast Guard (USCG) physical requirements for merchant seaman as outlined in 46 CFR and given on USCG Form CG-719K. Must be able to spend extended periods away from home port, as much as 2/3 of the ship's sailing schedule (approximately 140 days) for up to three weeks at a time. Must maintain certifications in Marine Fire Fighting, Radar Observer, First Aid and CPR. Must pass a preemployment drug screening test and be willing to be enrolled in a Department of Transportation random drug testing program.
