FLSA Status: Non-exempt Revised November 3, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under limited supervision, installs, modifies, repairs and maintains a wide variety of data communication systems. May assist in surveying installation areas to determine work methods, tools, materials, etc. The principal emphasis is on installing, troubleshooting and repairing a wide variety of standard and occasionally more complex data communication equipment which is usually combined and interrelated with other data communication equipment. Requires a high level of independent judgment in the application of established procedures. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Installs standard and moderately complex data communication equipment and components such as modems, multiplexers, data-over-voice units, terminal servers, routers, connector blocks, wiring and cables; * Interprets drawings, specifications and schematics to repair and modify standard and more complex data communication systems; * Configures and maintains soft-settings on data communication equipment; * Provides ongoing maintenance support for standard and more complex data communication systems; * Monitors and operates systems to analyze malfunctions which occur during production operations and performs necessary corrective actions; * Installs, maintains and repairs intra-building wiring systems, communications termination devices, interface equipment and transmission facilities; * Maintains and recommends purchases to maintain adequate inventory of supplies; * Maintains accurate installation and maintenance records; * Performs other related duties as required. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Work is typically performed inside and possibly in dusty and dirty areas. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of an Associate's degree in electronics or equivalent formal military and/or private training and three years of hands-on experience within the University's Data Communications unit or the data communications field providing knowledge of the types of data communications systems used within the University. Demonstrated understanding of the principles of analog and digital electronics. Requires comprehensive knowledge of the operation, capabilities and limitations of standard and more specialized data communications equipment; knowledge of communication software; ability to interpret schematics; knowledge of University practices and procedures, standard trade practices, and safety rules and regulations; and the ability to communicate effectively with people having various levels of technical expertise and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. Experience with advanced features of communications software and knowledge of local, state and national codes that govern the installation of communication systems preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Work requires frequent bending, pulling cables and wires, using hand and power tools, and working in awkward positions. Technician stands and walks for extended periods and occasionally climbs and works from ladders. Ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. May require occasional off-hour work, overtime or regularly scheduled on-call status. Possession of valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
