FLSA Status: Nonexempt Created: July 1, 2000 NATURE OF JOB: Under limited supervision assists with the maintenance of the greenhouse facilities and University Botanic Gardens. The principal emphasis is providing research and teaching support including oversight for the maintenance of the greenhouse and gardens and assisting in the annual plant sale. Independent judgment and thorough understanding of the application of horticultural techniques are required. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Coordinates, supervises and instructs student workers and volunteers to provide general maintenance of the gardens and plant installation; * Monitors and troubleshoots computer and various mechanical systems that control environmental conditions in greenhouse; researches and evaluates related problems; * Ensures that the greenhouse plants and University of Delaware Botanic Gardens (UDBG) are cared for in the absence of the manager; * Monitors greenhouse for pest/disease and applies herbicides/pesticides; prepares and applies agricultural chemicals following standard operating procedures; * Co-coordinates the UDBG annual plant sale; selects appropriate plants through market research; coordinates purchase and monitors delivery; analyze plant sales and revenue; * Oversees and coordinates educational/instructional programs and schedules for volunteers; * Collects soil samples and interprets test data; implements appropriate research methods for corrective measures; * Develops and maintains research plots; evaluates and collects and analyzes data on plants; propagates plants as required for teaching, research and extension; * Develops and maintains outside herbaceous garden laboratory for PLSC 211; * Purchases supplies and maintains plant sale inventories; * Creates accession records and labels plant specimens; * Performs other related duties as assigned. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold and wet/humid conditions. Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in plant science and one year of related research experience. Supervisory experience preferred. Related progressive experience beyond a high school diploma or GED may be substituted for required education or additional related education may be substituted for required experience. Requires knowledge of plant and soil science research techniques and protocol; the operation of small lawn and garden equipment; basic computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet; ability to instruct or provide guidance to staff and work independently from oral and/or written instructions; interpersonal skills; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time. Requires dexterity to perform accurate measurements. Employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment. May be required to obtain and maintain a valid pesticide applicator's license.
