SENIOR ELECTRONICS/ INSTRUMENT SPECIALIST (T7)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

NATURE OF JOB:
Under limited supervision, performs highly skilled and complex technical work on major electronic or complex instrumentation equipment, maintains inventory and aids in the design of laboratory experiments. The principal emphasis is on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of complex equipment. Independent judgment is required in the application of established policies and procedures. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical

* Troubleshoots, repairs and assists in the design, development and operation of highly specialized electronic laboratory equipment and instrumentation; orients others in the use of this equipment;
* Advises students and faculty on setting up research experiments;
* Procures, issues and maintains department equipment inventory and obtains service manuals and information from manufacturers;
* Maintains stockroom and parts inventory; 
* Designs and constructs lab test boards and instructional aids;
* Provides electronics assistance as requested; 
* Serves as liaison with other units and electronic manufacturers for specialized services;
* Maintains parts, inventory reference, schematics, manuals, files, etc.; 
* May design computer-related hardware and software;
* May supervised other staff members;
* Prepares schematics and/or drawings;
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
Required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of an Associate's degree in electronics with three years of relevant experience with scientific electronic apparatus, mechanisms, research instruments and/or computer systems.  Supervisory experience and experience with scientific electronic apparatus and mechanisms preferred. Requires the ability to work independently with limited supervision; organizational skills; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires the ability to visually color code wire, size conduit and troubleshoot related problems.
