COMPUTER OPERATOR III (T7)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under limited supervision, operates administrative, academic and instructional mainframe computers and associated peripherals running under various operating systems. The principal emphasis is on operating, monitoring and troubleshooting main frame systems and various subsystems using established guidelines and recording detailed information of status of all systems.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work

* Monitors and troubleshoots operation of multiple mainframe systems, subsystems and software; escalates major problems to shift leader or Computer Operator IV;
* Runs, monitors and verifies correct completion of production jobs; uses production software tools to make schedule or job adjustments as instructed by production control or support programmers;
* Operates and maintains peripheral equipment such as impact printer, laser printer, scanner, thermo-bond and burster; 
* Provides training to staff;
* Starts up and shuts down software following establish guidelines;
* Backs up disk storage on all machines;
* Powers up and down peripherals and stand-alone systems;
* Monitors machine room environmental systems and handles problems;
* Communicates with Help Center personnel regarding issues that affect user access; updates v-mail message for problems occurring after normal business hours;
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with three to four years of experience operating IBM and for Sun mainframes using OS390 or Unix operating system or four to five years of experience on similar mainframes and operating systems. Requires experience setting up and maintaining printers, tape drives, thermo-bond and bursters. Additional related education may be substituted for required experience. Requires knowledge of personal computer functions using a Windows environment, Netscape and Netscape mail; basic fundamentals of word processing; general mechanical aptitude; the ability to understand verbal or written instructions, document detail of events and communicate and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires the ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, computer equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, dexterity to set up, operate and troubleshoot computers and associated peripherals, and ability to accurately align material for printing jobs.
