FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under general supervision, performs a variety of complex technical laboratory, field duties and supervisory work. The principal emphasis is on conducting complex laboratory analyses, tests, experiments and determinations which may include designing, modifying and installing complex laboratory equipment in support of research activities and establishing operating procedures. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Performs a variety of technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical or biological tests, experiments and determinations to obtain data in support of research activities; * Designs, constructs and maintains various experimental systems; * Assists in the development of new research systems and procedures: modifies existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet needs of research projects as required; * Sets up instruments, materials and apparatus for tests, such as pH meter, color meter, auto analyzer, spectrometer; * Compiles and documents procedures and results; operates various electronic devices in the collection, tabulation and calculation of data; * Obtains, prepares, mounts and stains tissue, blood and other substances for microscopic examinations; * Prepares culture media, chemicals, reagents and solutions; * Maintains sufficient inventory of materials, supplies and equipment; * Cleans and maintains testing equipment; * Maintains safety standards; disposes of infectious and/or hazardous materials in order to meet regulations; * Provides technical guidance and instruction to laboratory users who may include postdoctoral scholars, graduate and undergraduate students; * Supervises and trains personnel; * Maintains records; * Runs statistical analyses; prepares tables and graphs; * Operates drilling rig and ancillary equipment; * Acts as University contact with government agencies and professional organizations at both the local and national level; * Performs other related duties as assigned. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: May be required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of an Associate's degree in a related field and two years of experience in laboratory work. Bachelor's degree with a concentration in science related courses preferred. Supervisory experience preferred. Related progressive experience beyond a high school diploma or GED may be substituted for required education or additional related education may be substituted for required experience. Requires knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures and instrumentation; knowledge of principles of science and engineering; foundation in physical sciences, chemistry, electronics, engineering, etc.; technical aptitude; independent problem solving skills; intermediate computer skills including competency in spreadsheet software; ability to work independently from oral and/or written instructions, develop operating practices, assume responsibility and take initiative to perform tasks with little direct supervision; ability to train and instruct others; and ability to work well with faculty, scientists, students and the public and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Depending on assignment, the ability to routinely lift, with or without assistance, up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work above floor level or in pits may be required. Requires dexterity in handling delicate and/or hazardous materials. The ability to maintain a valid CDL A, B or C operator's license and/or State water well driller’s license may be required. In certain units, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
