FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under general supervision, performs skilled technical machine shop work. Independent judgment is required to follow verbal instructions as well as instructions from drawings and sketches. The principal emphasis is on the construction and repair of tools, dies, machine parts and assemblies using standard machine tools. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Operates power-driven tools (e.g., drill press, lathe, milling machine, grinders, etc.) and hand tools; * Welds, brazes, solders or uses other forms of bonding to join materials; * Constructs structures from steel, aluminum, polymers, composites or other common construction materials; * Assists with design and construction of lab and shop equipment working from verbal instructions or drawings; * Disassembles and assembles complex machines or equipment and makes, fits and installs parts; * Devises jigs and fixtures to accomplish aims of the shop; * Assists and instructs students in machine use and safety in fabricating projects; * Perform other related duties as assigned. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and completion of standard trades school courses with four to five years of machine shop experience including any apprenticeship time. Requires knowledge of machine tools, shop math and working properties of principal materials; technical aptitude; mechanical drawing skills; ability to work independently on assigned tasks from drawings, sketches or verbal instructions; ability to instruct others; interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. In certain positions, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
