FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under general supervision, designs and produces educational and other informative visual materials using skilled art techniques and graphic production equipment. The principal emphasis is on producing finished artwork in support of University instruction, research, administrative projects and public research activities. Requires independent judgment in the application of established policies and procedures. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical * Designs and prepares instructional materials in the form of diagrams, graphs, illustrations, charts, maps, lettering, etc.; * Produces artwork in an appropriate medium including computer generation, pen/ink and other appropriate media; * Reproduces artwork in the form of 35 mm slides, overhead transparencies, color prints, posters and digital files; * Provides design assistance in the translation of complex verbal ideas into visual material; * Produces graphics using computers, graphic digital imaging equipment, scanners, printers, etc.; * Makes presentations concerning services; * Designs publications as needed; * Monitors and maintains inventory; * Evaluates and reviews software and new techniques for implementation as needed; * Performs other related duties as assigned. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with graphic design related course work including photography or two years of experience in the field of commercial art in an educational, media or related environment. Requires knowledge of the techniques utilized in producing visual aids for instructional purposes; ability to create and produce visual aids, finished artwork, posters/displays and/or publications; demonstrated aptitude to use graphics software; skill in the use of a variety of media and digital imaging equipment; slide-making skills using copy stand photography; ability to analyze graphic artwork problems and design effective solutions; general graphic design ability; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires the ability to accurately discern colors, focus images, and troubleshoot related problems.
