FARM ASSISTANT IV (T6)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision and following standard operating procedures, assists researchers and project leaders and collects experimental data related to research farm duties. The principal emphasis is on performing a broad range of mechanical, electrical and construction duties to maintain buildings and equipment in good working condition and various duties related to the care and management of farm animals and/or crops. Follows nonroutine schedule. Independent judgment is required to resolve routine and nonroutine problems.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical
 
* Overhauls and rebuilds engines, works on brakes, transmissions, clutches, etc.; 
* Builds new equipment for experimental use; 
* Welds (arc, oxyacetylene) and cuts; 
* Performs carpentry work including repairs; remodels and constructs buildings; 
* Performs plumbing work including repairs and replacement of faulty equipment; 
* Performs masonry work;
* Performs electrical work including replacing motors; repairs equipment; 
* Responsible for the checkout, use and security of shop tools and equipment;
* Operates and maintains complex farm equipment and tools such as self-propelled harvesting equipment; 
* Provides assistance to researchers in conducting experiments and collecting experimental data; 
* Produces forage crops and grains; 
* May train, instruct and supervise staff or student workers; 
* May perform the duties of Farm Assistant III;
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with four years of farm experience in operating various types of equipment and farm machinery and/or knowledge of crops, livestock and dairy management. Requires advanced and comprehensive plumbing, carpentry, masonry, electrical, welding and mechanical skills; demonstrated computer skills; and the ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work in cramped areas and positions for extended periods of time, climb ladders in excess of 50 feet, and work above floor level or in pits.  May be required to maintain a valid CDL A, B or C operator's license. Employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment. May be required to obtain and maintain a valid pesticide applicator’s license.
