ELECTRONICS/INSTRUMENT SPECIALIST (T6)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of complex technical duties in the operation, maintenance and calibration of sophisticated instrumentation. The principal emphasis is on the operation, repair and maintenance of research equipment involving electronics, mechanical and vacuum systems. Requires independent judgment in the application of established policies and procedures. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical

* Performs maintenance and repairs on electronic test or laboratory research equipment; 
* Interacts with faculty and students for the resolution of equipment malfunctions and operations; 
* Operates, maintains and calibrates electronic equipment; 
* Maintains and purchases inventory of equipment and supplies;
* Records labor and material used on the job; 
* Designs and assembles equipment (e.g., electronics, optics, etc.), as necessary; 
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
Required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with two to three years of electronics or instrument technician experience. Associate's degree in electronics preferred. Requires mechanical aptitude; soldering experience; knowledge of the principles of physics including heat and optics; ability to understand and work from complex published instructions; ability to construct equipment from written or oral instructions; knowledge of principles of electronics and electronic instruments; basic knowledge of hand tools and electronic equipment; basic computer skills; the ability to learn various instrumentation software applications and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires the ability to visually color code wire, size conduit and troubleshoot related problems.
