COMPUTER OPERATIONS SPECIALIST (T6)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, maintains the Data Center media library. This includes administration of media tape library software, input, verification, retrieval, reconcilement of off-site tape rotation, interaction with vendors, special handling of media distribution, trouble shooting and problem resolution.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work
:
* Maintains the vault tape management system software (VTMS) for off-site storage, and other media as requested by systems, administrative and academic users;
* Reviews error reports within tape library's Platinum AutoMedia and Storagtek software; edits prodlib.system.parmlib with automedia software;
* Maintains an ample supply of media available for daily backups, production jobs and/or systems applicable to operations; daily media filing;
* Expedites user support requests for tape library resources; certifies tapes medial distribution, cartridge/reel replacement and addition of media to all types of systems;
* Maintains daily statistics and inventory of all media type using on-line software;
* Disaster recovery support team; responsible for testing and actual DR of all media type to perform this function; vendor correspondence, off-hour availability, handling of confidential media and tape library documentation;
* Interacts with other IT staff in updating or correcting tape library parameters regarding tape retention and off-site rotation requirements;
* Provides operator functions, cross-training, troubleshooting and vendor maintenance issues when necessary;
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with two years' experience operating IBM, HP or SUN; four years experience preferred. Experience with mainframes running similar operating systems and familiarity with University computing environment preferred. Requires extensive knowledge of higher level operating system commands; knowledge of all policies/ procedures and database concepts; knowledge of and experience in job language verification; knowledge and understanding of production support software; ability to follow and give complex instructions; detail orientation strengths; manual dexterity; mechanical ability and the ability to communicate and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
