COMPUTER OPERATOR II (T6)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, operates administrative, academic and instructional mainframe computers and associated peripherals running under various operating systems. The principal emphasis is on operating, monitoring and troubleshooting main frame systems and various subsystems using established guidelines and recording detailed information of status of all systems.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work

* Monitors the operation of multiple mainframes systems and subsystems; handles correction of minor problems using established documented procedures;
* Runs, monitors and verifies correct completion of production jobs;
* Reviews restart/rerun documentation for job failures before escalating to shift leader or production control;
* Operates peripheral equipment such as tape drives, impact printer, laser printer, scanner, thermo-bond and burster; performs preventive maintenance (e.g., cleaning) and resolves minor problems following documented guidelines;
* Starts up and shuts down software applications when instructed;
* Monitors machine room environmental systems and reports problems;
* Handles problems using established procedures;
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED, with one to two years of experience operating IBM and/or Sun mainframes using OS390 or Unix operating system or two to three years of experience on similar mainframes and operating systems. Requires experience setting up and maintaining printer, tape drives, thermo-bond and bursters. Additional related education may be substituted for required experience. Requires knowledge of personal computer functions using Windows environment, Netscape and Netscape mail; basic word processing skills; general mechanical aptitude; the ability to understand verbal or written instructions, document detail of events, and communicate and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires the ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, computer equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, dexterity to set up, operate and troubleshoot computers and associated peripherals and ability to accurately align material for printing jobs.
