MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN (T5)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, performs maintenance work on equipment and machinery. The principal emphasis is on the knowledge and efficient operation of numerous kinds of mechanical and electrical equipment and hand and power tools; follows nonroutine schedule; occasional independent judgment is required in the application of established policies and procedures. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical examples of work: 

* Welds (arc, oxyacetylene) and cuts; 
* Paints (spray paints equipment, trucks, etc.); 
* Builds new equipment for experimental use (design and supervision involved); 
* Performs preventive maintenance on all equipment; 
* Repairs broken equipment; 
* Overhauls and rebuilds engines (cars, trucks, tractors and lawn mowers); 
* Performs engine tune-up (trucks, cars, tractors and lawn mowers); 
* Performs engine troubleshooting when motors are not performing;
* Works on brakes, transmissions, clutches, etc.; 
* Operates all equipment such as tractors, trucks, cars, combine, anhydrous ammonia applicators, chain saws, front-end loaders and irrigation systems; 
* Grades dirt roads and driveways; 
* Performs masonry work including laying block and finishing concrete; 
* Performs carpentry work including repairs; remodels and constructs buildings, both rough and finished work; 
* Performs plumbing including repairs and replacement of faulty equipment; 
* Records research data; 
* Works with project leaders in operating equipment for planting and harvesting research plots; 
* Sharpens drill bits, chain and hand saws; 
* Repairs tires; 
* Responsible for hand tools and housekeeping in general shop area; 
* Assigns work for staff as needed;
* Performs maintenance to swimming pool and ice facilities;
* Performs general lawn maintenance and mowing; 
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:

Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with knowledge of general practices and operation of equipment. Requires thorough mechanical knowledge; knowledge of heating, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and masonry work; the ability to learn and accept new ideas, techniques and responsibilities; interpersonal skills; and the ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds are essential. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work above and below ground level, ascend and descend ladders up to 50 feet, work in cramped quarters and lift, with or without assistance, up to 50 pounds. Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license for specific class of vehicle driven. In certain positions, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
