FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under general supervision, constructs and repairs tools, dies, machine parts and assemblies using all standard machine shop tools. The principal emphasis is on working from drawings, sketches and verbal instructions and machining parts to close tolerances. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on unit assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Operates power driven tools (e.g., drill press, lathe, milling machine, grinders, etc.) and hand tools: * Welds, brazes, solders or uses other forms of bonding to join materials; * Constructs structures from steel, aluminum, polymers, composites or other common construction materials; * Assists with design and construction of lab and shop equipment working from verbal instructions or drawings; * Disassembles and assembles complex machines or equipment and makes, fits and installs parts as required; * Devises jigs and fixtures to accomplish aims of the shop; * Keeps records and maintains storerooms; * Assists and instructs students in machine use and safety in fabricating projects; * Performs other related duties as assigned. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with one year of mechanical experience. Requires mechanical drawing skills and the ability and desire to advance to more complex training or duties within the machine shop. Must understand scientific terminology. Requires the ability to work with faculty, students and staff and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. In certain positions, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
