FARM ASSISTANT III (T5)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision and following standard operating procedures, assists researchers and supervisors, collects experimental data related to research farm operations, and performs mechanical duties. The primary emphasis is on performing maintenance and construction of farm equipment and facilities. Assists in research and crop production. Maintains buildings and equipment in good working conditions and performs various duties related to the care and management of farm animals and/or crops. Independent judgment is required to resolve routine problems.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical
 
* Performs routine tasks such as feeding, watering, milking and breeding of farm animals;
* Repairs, constructs and maintains farm equipment and facilities; 
* Maintains security of animals and facilities;
* Reports and responds to routine and, on occasion, nonroutine unusual conditions;
* Administers drugs and medications as instructed; 
* Assists in the production of forage crops and grains;
* Operates complex farm equipment and tools such as self-propelled harvesting equipment; 
* Provides assistance to researchers in conducting experiments and collecting experimental data; 
* Reports unusual instances or conditions affecting the well-being of animals as needed; 
* Maintains production, health and inventory records; 
* May train, instruct and supervise staff or student workers; 
* Assists veterinarians with medical procedures;
* May perform the duties of a Farm Assistant II;
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with three years of farm experience, operating various types of equipment and farm machinery and/or knowledge of crops, livestock and dairy management. Requires basic knowledge of plumbing, carpentry, masonry, electrical, welding and/or mechanical skills. Requires basic computer skills and the ability to work from sketches or drawings and communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work in cramped areas and positions for extended periods of time, climb ladders in excess of 50 feet, and work above floor level or in pits. May be required to maintain a valid CDL A, B or C operator's license. Employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment. May be required to obtain and maintain a valid pesticide applicator's license.
