FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under general supervision, independently performs typesetting, layout and design of a wide variety of internal University publications. The principal emphasis is on producing finished artwork and visual materials using software and equipment. Requires independent judgment in the application of established policies and procedures. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical * Creates and composes publications for the University community; performs design, layout and typesetting to produce finished product; * Provides design assistance and advice in the translation of verbal ideas into visual materials for a wide variety of publications; * Reproduces copy on high resolution 2500 dpi laser output device; * Proofreads and edits copy; * Maintains electronic filing systems to accommodate reordering of jobs and reuse of artwork for creation of new designs; * Cleans and maintains equipment including photographic processing device; * Maintains inventory and orders supplies; * Performs other related duties as assigned. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and two years of experience in graphic design including composition equipment, computerized typesetting and desktop publishing systems. Requires knowledge of printing industry for preparation and layout of artwork for specific printing and bindery requirements; ability to follow instructions, edit text accurately and work independently in copy layout, design work and use of graphic arts equipment; basic computer skills using graphic design software; and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires the ability to accurately discern colors, focus images, and troubleshoot related problems.
