CAMERA/PLATEMAKER OPERATOR (T5)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the production of quality line and half-tone negatives and offset plates. The principal emphasis is on the stripping of multicolor jobs, platemaking and camera support to offset press operators. 
EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on assignment, the following are typical examples of work:
* Sets up and operates overhead camera to photograph illustrations and printed material to provide negatives for reproduction plates;
* Mounts material to be photographed, adjusts lights, focuses camera for enlargements or reductions, determines proper timing;
* Photographs and develops negatives;
* Mixes chemical developer solutions and baths;
* Develops photostats using stat-maker;
* Proofs negatives for clarity of copy;
* Strips and mounts films using knife, masking sheet and opaquing techniques;
* Makes blue lines, matchprints and color proofs;
* Makes grain or regular metal plates from stripped negatives using platemaker;
* Exposes negative to metal plate;
* Chemically develops metal plate;
* Maintains records of supplies for camera room operation;
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES: Occasionally required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and relevant technical training, or two years' experience in offset camera work and platemaking operations. Requires knowledge of offset camera work and platemaking operations; ability to lay out copy and artwork; knowledge of darkroom and development techniques; skill in the use of the tools of the trade; technical judgment; mechanical aptitude; organizational skills; and the ability to communicate effectively and to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires the ability to lift, with or without assistance, up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
