LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (T4)
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine technical laboratory duties following standard operating procedures. May provide guidance to other personnel. The principal emphasis is on assisting in the operations of a laboratory. Independent judgment is required to resolve routine matters.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work:

* Performs a variety of routine technical tests and examinations;
* Procures and sets up equipment, instruments and materials used in performing tests or experiments in the laboratory or in the field as prescribed;
* Maintains and operates standard laboratory equipment; cleans and sterilizes instruments and glassware;
* Prepares culture media, samples for analysis, chemicals, standard and buffer solutions, reagents, etc.;
* Prepares and maintains a variety of routine laboratory records;
* Enters data and performs computations using  prepared spreadsheet or database programs; 
* Documents results of experiments;
* Cares for, maintains and prepares laboratory specimens and culture media;
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED supplemented with related technical training in a scientific field or experience in laboratory work. Requires knowledge of laboratory equipment, techniques, procedures and record keeping; ability to work from oral and written instructions; technical aptitude; basic computer skills including ability to input, edit, save, and retrieve data and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
With or without assistance, must be able to routinely lift up to 50 pounds. Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials and the ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials. May require a valid vehicle operator's license. In certain units, employment is dependent upon passing a University-specified medical evaluation related to the use of respiratory protection equipment.
