LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE (V5)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision of a Registered Nurse or Physician, uses a variety of equipment, procedures and techniques depending on the service assignment. Performs direct and accurate patient care including nursing routines and charting; administers treatments and medications as ordered by the Physician. The principal emphasis is on assisting in direct patient care. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical

* Performs routine patient care to include vital signs and a.m./p.m. care; 
* Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients;
* Administers a variety of treatments to include compresses, soaks, dressing changes and wound care; 
* Gives medication to include all oral and injectable medication;
* Orders and supervises distribution of trays; 
* Observes, records and reports signs, symptoms and reactions indicative of changes in the general physical and mental condition of the patient to include charting and shift reports; 
* Administers personal hygienic and nursing care for the comfort and well-being of patients such as bed baths, fever sponges, back rubs, enemas and dental hygiene; 
* Maintains a neat, hygienic and safe environment and work area; 
* Ensures the efficient and proper use of equipment and supplies;
* Guides student employees in their work; 
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:

Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Must be a graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved practical nursing education program and be licensed to practice practical nursing in Delaware in accordance with Delaware Code, Title 24 (Professions and Occupations) Chapter 19 (Nursing). Requires one year of related nursing experience. Some experience in medical and surgical areas outside the University; experience in areas of gynecology and adolescent care desirable. Requires a working knowledge of basic anatomy; knowledge of pharmacology; ability to learn the use of A/O screener for sight testing, audiometer and electrocardiogram; ability to keep accurate medical records and reports; ability to establish good rapport with patient; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; sensitivity and ability to relate to multicultural issues; demonstrated human relations skills and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds are essential. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift wheelchair-bound patients and others requiring transport assistance to bed, bath, etc.
