CLASSROOM ASSISTANT (V4)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under the general supervision of the Director and the Classroom Teacher, helps to conduct the educational program of  the School of Education. The principal emphasis is on providing support to the classroom teacher in implementing an educational program for children with learning differences. Independent judgment and discretion are required in classroom management, utilizing alternative instructional strategies for individual children, and maintaining confidentiality. 
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical

* Assists in implementing daily lessons by following the Classroom Teacher's plans (e.g., teaching an individual or small group of children, reading to the children), and assisting in incorporating technology in classroom lessons (e.g., boot and shut down computers); 
* Assists with classroom management (e.g., helping with student organization such as putting on coats, tying shoes, sharpening pencils, ensuring everything is in book bag for dismissal, etc.); 
* Monitors student arrival/dismissal, lunchroom, recess, bathroom and field trips; 
* Assumes teacher's responsibilities temporarily when s/he is temporarily out of the classroom; 
* Maintains and organizes student records, collects data about student progress for Individualized Educational Program (IEP), documents parent/guardian meetings/conferences and student behavior incidents;
* Monitors student assignments and provides feedback to teachers/parents/guardians;management plans; 
* Participates in IEP meetings and parent/guardian conferences; 
* Participates in school committee meetings and school-related activities;
* Performs clerical and organizational tasks such as photocopying, creating bulletin boards, writing monthly classroom news for the school newsletter, cleaning common areas and constructing instructional materials; 
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold and wet/humid conditions. 

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE, AND ABILITIES:

Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and two years of experience working with children with learning differences. Requires basic computer skills, basic math, reading and written language skills, demonstrated human relations skills, and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
May require passing a preemployment drug screening, comprehensive background investigation including fingerprints/criminal history, and health certification including a PPD Tuberculin Skin Test (Mantoux).
