FLSA Status: Nonexempt Revised July 1, 1999 NATURE OF JOB: Under limited supervision, performs a variety of responsible, complex duties in the coordination of a library unit including organizing, assigning and reviewing daily work flow and ensuring the implementation of internal and external administrative policies and procedures. Provides supervision to salaried staff and students. Determines priorities and resolves administrative problems and personnel issues as they arise. The principal emphasis is on applying technical skills and knowledge to specialized functions in a variety of library operations and on highly responsible supervision of staff; independent judgment is required in the application and development of library procedures. EXAMPLES OF WORK: Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work: * Organizes, assigns and generally reviews daily work assignments of other salaried support staff; * Interviews job applicants; makes recommendations regarding hiring, performance evaluation, merit increase and training of staff; * Compiles, verifies and produces statistical reports; * Evaluates unit's procedures and recommends modifications and changes; * Coordinates the staffing of operational areas to ensure coverage at all times; * Answers difficult questions requiring the knowledge of the unit's entire reference collection of print, networked and Internet resources; * Performs other related duties as assigned. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with specialized library-related skills gained from five years of experience of a progressively responsible nature preferred; two years of related college course work preferred. Requires substantial supervisory experience including hiring, training and evaluation of staff and student employees; working knowledge of library practices and procedures; knowledge of specific departmental operations; knowledge of the principles and practices of general administration; ability to work independently and devise solutions to problems; excellent organizational and public service skills; demonstrated ability to use advanced computer techniques in word processing, spreadsheet, database and Web-based applications; comprehensive reading skills in modern foreign language(s) may be required; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
