LIBRARY ASSISTANT (L7)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under limited supervision, performs a variety of complex duties supporting the organization and preservation of library collections. The principal emphasis is applying technical skills and knowledge to highly specialized library functions; independent judgment is required in the application and development of library procedures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work:

* Responsible for advanced copy cataloging of nonprint, foreign language and special collections materials; edits bibliographic records by interpreting and applying complex cataloging rules according to nationally accepted standards; assigns classification numbers;
* Performs original cataloging including assignment of classification number;
* Responsible for advanced processing of archival and manuscript collections; evaluates, arranges and describes materials according to archival principles and preservation standards; produces finding aids, inventories, indexes and databases;
* Reconciles receipt of rare, out-of-print, special collections and nonprint materials with orders and confirms for payment; 
* Performs in-house preservation work and provides collection maintenance for manuscripts;
* Interprets new developments and technical data from manuals, bulletins, workshops, etc., developing workable procedures; 
* Answers difficult questions requiring the knowledge of the unit's entire reference collection of print, networked and Internet resources; 
* Performs complex and unique repairs to books, pamphlets and serials from the Library's collections using conservation materials and techniques; 
* Makes decisions and recommendations on appropriate forms of preservation treatment considering value, variety of uniqueness, patterns of use, costs, etc.; 
* Designs and constructs protective enclosures for library materials in the general and special collections;
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:

Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with specialized library-related skills gained from five years of experience of a progressively responsible nature preferred; two years of related college course work preferred. Requires specialized knowledge of library records, the management module of DELCAT and other bibliographic resources; demonstrated ability to use advanced computer techniques in word processing, spreadsheet, database and Web-based applications; ability to work independently and devise solutions to problems; advanced organizational and time management skills; formal training in book repair techniques by a professional conservator or one year's experience handling and treating works of art on paper or library materials may be required; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
