LIBRARY COORDINATOR (L6)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of complex duties in the coordination of a library unit. May supervise or guide the activities of other unit personnel. The principal emphasis is on applying technical skills and knowledge to specialized functions in a variety of library operations; independent judgment is required in the application and development of library procedures.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work:

* Functions as night or weekend supervisor with primary responsibility for supervising students in library operations, maintaining effective liaison with security, interpreting library policy and assisting faculty, staff, students and general public; 
* Responsible for the day-to-day operations of a branch library including the provision of reference service, the maintenance of catalogs, the processing of interlibrary loan and other requests, and the supervision of circulation activities;
* Monitors activities of a limited staff involved with a specialized function of a larger unit; 
* Ensures that all personnel are knowledgeable in and follow established procedures; 
* Recommends to supervisor deviations to established procedures; documents and implements changes; 
* Makes recommendations on selection, training, and evaluating staff; 
* Provides guidance to others regarding library systems and procedures; 
* Reviews and analyzes circulation records, checking accuracy, exercising independent judgment in adjusting or canceling fines and maintaining liaison with other administrative offices on campus; 
* Conducts special studies as required to include summarization, analysis and interpretation of data; 
* Uses a variety of reference sources, including DELCAT, local and remote databases, and the Internet to provide in-person and telephone assistance to faculty, staff, students and the general public; 
* Supervises student assistants including hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating performance;
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with specialized library related skills gained from four years of experience of a progressively responsible nature preferred; two years of college course work preferred. Requires working knowledge of library records, the management module of DELCAT and other specialized library databases, and procedures in specific departmental operations; demonstrated ability to perform difficult bibliographic searches in a variety of bibliographic databases and the Internet; demonstrated ability to use intermediate computer techniques in word processing, spreadsheet, database and Web-based applications; comprehensive reading skill in modern foreign language(s) may be required; the ability to work independently and devise solutions to problems; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. Some positions may require supervisory experience.
