LIBRARY GENERALIST (L5)

NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of library duties. The principal emphasis is on performing complex library operations according to established procedures; independent judgment is required in the application of established library procedures. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work:

* Interprets and edits bibliographic records in the OCLC (national cataloging system) as appropriate; 
* Uses a variety of reference sources including DELCAT, OCLC, the Internet and other bibliographic databases to assist users identify and locate information; 
* Identifies and selects appropriate vendor for purchase of library materials;
* Creates order records on DELCAT and prepares forms for filing;
* Performs difficult bibliographic searches using a variety of bibliographic tools including book and nonprint sources; 
* Analyzes, selects, and transfers bibliographic records from OCLC to DELCAT for library materials to be added to the collection, creating provisional tagged records for unverified materials;
* Performs preorder searching for rare and out-of-print materials, searching specialized departmental files and verifying citations in rare book catalogs and other bibliographic sources;
* Corresponds with domestic and foreign vendors on invoice problems, overcharges, etc.;
* Processes interlibrary loan borrowing requests, verifying bibliographic data, selecting appropriate library and commercial suppliers; orders items; monitors orders and resolves problems;
* Coordinates processing of new library materials;
* Maintains a variety of departmental financial and statistical records; prepares weekly, monthly and annual reports as required; 
* Trains and provides functional supervision of student assistants in day-to-day work assignments; 
* Prepares correspondence, reports and related documents as required; 
* Interprets library practices and policies for faculty, staff, students and public users;
* Provides basic technical support of microform and microcomputing equipment including minor repair and routine care; 
* Assists library users in identifying and locating microform materials, operating readers and reader/printers, and using appropriate finding aids and indexes; 
* Provides in-person and telephone assistance concerning use of Special Collections material and supervises use of materials in the Special Collections reading room;
* Performs other related duties as assigned. 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with three years of library experience preferred; two years of college course work preferred. Requires knowledge of library records, bibliographic networks and databases, and procedures in specific departmental operations; basic reading skill in modern foreign language(s) may be required; ability to follow complex written and oral instructions; ability to prepare reports and keep records; high level of accuracy and attention to detail; ability to work independently and devise solutions to problems; computer keyboard skills; demonstrated ability to use intermediate computer techniques in word processing, spreadsheet, database and Web-based applications; and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
