NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, performs routine and diverse duties. The
principal emphasis is on performing routine clerical duties according
to established procedures; some independent judgment is required in
the application of established library procedures.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples
of work:
* Uses standard guides and computer catalogs to provide in-person
and telephone assistance to faculty, staff, students and the general
public regarding library information;
* Searches and interprets bibliographic information in both local
and remote databases to ascertain the availability of a given publication
for a library user;
* Performs moderately difficult bibliographic searches using a variety
of bibliographic tools including book and nonprint sources to verify
a specific item for acquisitions or cataloging purposes;
* Processes interlibrary loan transactions associated with lending
library materials, monitoring work flow and ensuring that obligations
to institutional trading partners are met;
* Maintains financial, statistical and other records; prepares weekly,
monthly or annual reports as required;
* Trains and provides functional supervision of student employees
in day-to-day work assignments;
* Assists in processing the reserve lists including searching, retrieving
and ordering materials;
* Maintains copying machines and other hardware including such duties
as cleaning, stocking with paper, performing minor repairs, collecting
money from machines and keeping appropriate records;
* Collects, sorts and arranges materials to be filed and/or reshelved;
alerts supervisor of maintenance, stacking and/or filing problems;
* Monitors and orders office supplies;
* Searches stacks for missing items, requesting replacement if necessary;
* Prepares correspondence, reports and related documents as required;
* Participates in shifts of collections;
* Provides direct service to users at circulation desks including
charging and discharging material using DELCAT (library's on-line
system) and answering questions on policies and procedures;
* Recalls material in circulation for library users;
* Verifies bibliographic data and performs routine editing of bibliographic
records;
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED. Some college education
with general library or office experience preferred. Requires knowledge
of business English; ability to follow complex written and oral instructions;
ability to maintain records; basic computer skills including ability
to search, retrieve, edit and save data; some positions require basic
computer keyboard skills; and the ability communicate effectively
and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
In certain positions, must be able to lift, with or without assistance,
boxes of books and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, push and pull
full book carts weighing up to 250 pounds, and bend and reach to place
books and journals on library shelves ranging from 3 to 90 inches
high.
