Steps for Requesting Level 9 Position Consideration

  1. The request for position consideration is initiated by the unit head/department chair, using the appropriate form for reclassification of a salaried staff position.  For level 9 position consideration, the unit head/department chair must also submit a separate one-page document stating the rationale for the request and explaining why, in the judgment of the supervisor, the duties performed meet the established criteria for a level 9 position.

  2. The appropriate vice president/academic dean will review the position request and, if supported, send the requested action forward to the executive vice president or provost for consideration.  At each review level, the stringent criteria developed for the level 9 position will be applied before permission to proceed is granted.

  3. Subject to approval by the executive vice president or provost, the request will be forwarded to HR-Classification and Compensation for technical review and comparison.  Specifically, HR will review the explanation provided for reclassifying a position to level 9 with the requirements, characteristics, and responsibilities established for the position.  If there is congruency, HR-Classification and Compensation will conduct a desk audit.  All supporting documentation and forms will be forwarded to the level 9 classification review committee.

  4. The level 9 classification review committee will be comprised of a minimum of five academic and administrative professionals and salaried staff, as well as members from the Human Resources unit.  PAC and SSAC will provide names to the vice president for administration of individuals interested in serving on the committee.  The vice president for administration will appoint members to the committee for terms not to exceed two years.  It is the responsibility of the level 9 committee to be certain that the stringent criteria established for a level 9 position have been met before approval of the requested action can be granted.

  5. If an affirmative decision is reached by a majority of the committee, the manager of classification and compensation will notify the requesting unit head/department chair and the appropriate vice president/academic dean.  If the majority denies a request, a detailed response outlining the committee’s rationale for the rejection will be sent to the requesting unit head/department chair and to the vice president/academic dean.

  6. An appeal of a negative decision by the level 9 review committee may be made by a dean or vice president to the vice president for administration.

  7. When a level 9 position becomes vacant, the position will revert back to its previous classification level.
