Register your Computer's
Network Adapters


  1. Register your Ethernet (wired) Connection:

    1. Disable your wireless card, if you have one. This will prevent network conflicts.

      Windows Vista Windows XP Mac OS X
      1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Sharing Center, and then click View Status for the Wireless Connection.
      2. Click Disable.
      1. Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
      2. Right-click Wireless Network Connection and then click Disable.
      1. Click on the Airport icon Airport and select Turn Airport Off.

       
    2. Plug your Ethernet cable into your computer's Ethernet connection and the Ethernet jack in the wall.
    3. Open your Internet browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc).
      If your browser is trying to load a home page outside of the UD network, hit "Stop" or the x icon in Internet Explorer, and type in the address: www.udel.edu/network and hit Enter.
    4. If you can't bring up www.udel.edu/network, see IP Release/Renew.
    5. Login and choose Register a computer for Internet access. If security problems are detected, follow instructions to resolve them.
    6. In the Description, enter "ethernet" along with any other descriptors to identify your computer.
    7. Follow through the wizard and you will receive confirmation that your computer's network card was successfully registered.
      Faculty/Staff: Ask your Computer Support person whether you should enter a dedicated IP address.
    8. Wait about 30 minutes and reboot the computer. Complete steps at IP Release/Renew below, and you should have full access to the Internet.
       
  2. Register the Wireless connection, if you have one:

    1. Go to a UD-wireless area.
      (Note that wireless access is NOT guaranteed in Residence rooms; only in Residence lounges.)
    2. If you disabled your wireless card in Step 1-A, re-enable it now by clicking Enable in the Windows instructions above OR Turn Airport On (Macintosh). If you need to configure a new wireless card, see www.udel.edu/it-us/wireless/setupandusage.html.
    3. Open your Internet browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc).
      If your browser is trying to load a home page outside of the UD network, hit "Stop" or the x icon in Internet Explorer, and type in the address: www.udel.edu/network and hit Enter.
    4. Login and choose Register a computer for Internet access.
    5. In the Description, enter "wireless" along with any other descriptors to identify your computer.
    6. Follow through the wizard and you will receive confirmation that your computer's network card was successfully registered.
      Faculty/Staff: Ask your Computer Support person whether you should enter a dedicated IP address.
    7. Wait about 30 minutes and reboot the computer.
    8. Complete steps at IP Release/Renew below, and you should have full access to the Internet.
    9. When using the Ethernet connection, disable the wireless card to prevent network conflicts.
       

IP Release/Renew

If you can't bring up the web page www.udel.edu/network,
OR you can't connect to the Internet after registering your computer:

  • Click on the Start Button which places your cursor in the Start-Search box.
  • Type cmd and hit Shift-Ctrl-Enter.
  • When prompted "Windows needs your permission to continue", choose Continue to receive the black command prompt window.
  • On the command line in the black window, type
     ipconfig /release 
    (one space before /)
  • Then type
      ipconfig /renew
    (one space before /)  

    The system should respond with an IPv4 address of 10.x.x.x or 128.175.x.x   (x is a number) under the heading "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection" or "Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection".
  • Go to www.udel.edu/network, login and register your computer.
     
  • Go to the Start Button and choose Run.
  • In the Open box, type cmd and hit OK.
  • On the command line in the black window, type  
    ipconfig /release
    (one space before /)   The system should respond with an IP address of all zeros.
  • Then type  
    ipconfig /renew
    (one space before /)   The system should respond with an IP address of 10.x.x.x or 128.175.x.x   (x is a number).
  • Go to www.udel.edu/network, login and register your computer.
     
  • From the Apple Menu, click System Preferences.
  • Click Network.
  • In the Show pop-up menu, choose Network Port Configurations.
  • Uncheck the Network configuration you want to release (Built-in Ethernet or AirPort).
  • Click Apply Now.
  • Re-check the box to turn the configuration back on and click Apply Now.
  • Go to www.udel.edu/network, login and register your computer.
