New Faculty/Staff Checklist

Getting Started with Computing and Technology



  1. Check with your supervisor on the status of items specified on the Supervisor's Checklist for New Employees and complete the following: Also, determine if you have a Computing IT Associate (CITA) who supports computing in your department.

  2. Set up Emergency notification and your office telephone answering voice mailbox..

  3. Set up your UDelNet Account.   (Must wait overnight after receiving ID card.

    UDelNet Account WARNING
    E-mails from spammers requesting UDelNet ID /password occasionally circulate. (More info)
    Don't be phished! Delete these messages.

    Remember:
    You will NEVER be asked to confirm account information on-line to keep your account active - by the University of Delaware or any other legitimate entity.


  4. Protect your Computer and UDelNet Account

  5. Install UD-licensed software as needed from UDeploy.
    • UDeploy is the site for downloading UD-licensed and customized software, including web browsers and utilities, for University-owned computers and computers owned by employees and students.
    • UD provides McAfee anti-virus software from UDeploy. Your computer should have this software installed as evidenced by the McAfee icon virusscan logo in your computer's system tray (the bottom right corner of your screen, next to the time). If you do not see this icon, check with your CITA or contact the IT Help Center.
    • McAfee is configured to update virus definitions at computer startup. Read more about McAfee and keeping it up to date.
    • Download SSH Secure Shell software to connect to UD central systems, along with any other UD-licensed software as needed.

  6. Set up your E-mail.
    • If your department has its own e-mail server,
      • Use the instructions provided by your computer support staff to configure the desired e-mail software.
      • Set forwarding of UD mail to your departmental address.
         
    • Otherwise, e-mail is provided by UD central servers.
      • UD Webmail Direct, available through any browser at the web address:  http://mail.udel.edu  is a convenient method to read e-mail.
      • Other e-mail options
         
    • All Faculty/Staff:  
      • If your preferred e-mail address is something other than udelnetid@udel.edu, see customization directions to change your UD Online Directory listing   (Login required).

  7. Also have a laptop computer?
    • If your laptop computer is equipped with an ethernet card, unplug the desktop from your Ethernet connection and plug in your laptop, or use another active ethernet jack in your office.
    • Boot up the laptop computer and repeat steps 4-6 as needed.
    • Login to the University of Delaware Network and choose "Register a computer" for "Roaming IP access" to the Internet.
    • When registration has taken effect, you will be able to use the laptop anywhere on campus to access the UD network or the Internet.
    • If the same ethernet jack was used to register the laptop, unplug the laptop's ethernet cable, and plug in the desktop ethernet cable. Reboot the desktop computer to restore its connection to the Internet.

  10. Your Home Computer
    • Faculty/Staff may schedule an appointment at (302) 831-6000 to bring their home computer in for setup by the Technology Solutions Center.
       
    • UD provides a free modem direct dial connection to the University network
    • If you connect to the Internet using a non-UD Internet provider for your home computer,
      • Use UD webmail at http://mail.udel.edu to access UD e-mail.
      • When you access a UD Library licensed resource, you will be prompted once per session to authenticate as a member of the UD community.  (More info)
      • Verify that your home computer is set up securely by reviewing the Protect & Clean Checklists on www.udel.edu/security.
      • Check out additional information specifically for Home computers.
         
    • Review spousal UD e-mail account availability. After the spouse receives a UD#1 ID card, the employee can send e-mail to Access, requesting a spousal account.
