should take now!
- Get vaccinated for H1N1.
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand cleaners, especially after coughing or sneezing.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.

Recommended H1N1 vaccinations available free on campus

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continue to urge everyone to get vaccinated against the H1N1 flu, and vaccinations are available free to UD students, faculty and staff at Student Health.

Student Health has received H1N1 influenza vaccine from Delaware Public Health for University of Delaware students, faculty and staff. Additional clinics are now available in Student Health in Laurel Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 12, and Thursday, Jan. 14, by appointment only.
What is the H1N1 virus?
Novel H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a pandemic of novel H1N1 flu was under way. Source: CDC
How does H1N1 spread?
Spread of novel H1N1 virus is thought to occur in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something -- such as a surface or object -- with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose. Source: CDC

UD is working to ensure that the campus community is aware of the issues surrounding H1N1 influenza, its symptoms and treatment. Like most universities nationwide, the University of Delaware had an outbreak of H1N1 on the campus last spring. Fortunately, all the cases UD saw were relatively mild, and all students affected recovered quickly. UD has been working since the spring with officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Delaware Division of Public Health to educate the campus as national concerns about H1N1 persist.
