This policy is part of the 2008-2009 Academic Year Student
Housing Agreement.
Room Changes
To move from one room to another, you will need authorization
from Housing Assignment Services staff. Room changes must be authorized in advance
by Housing Assignment Services staff after in-building room changes at the beginning
of the semester. The signature of a Residence Life staff member is also required
after the open room change period of each semester.
After classes begin each semester, a specific room-change period
will be announced by Housing Assignment Services. Room changes are subject to
the following policies:
- If you initiate the room change, you will be required to move.
- Housing Assignment Services will not notify roommates about
room changes.
- A $20 fee is charged for all room changes during the semester
after the drop/add period, except moves from extended housing to a permanent
space.
- If you move or are moved to a space with a different rate,
your room charges for the semester or session will be adjusted to reflect
the length of time spent in each assigned space. A charge or credit will be
added to your student account.
- Room changes must be authorized in advance by Housing Assignment
Services staff.
University-Initiated Room Changes
The University can make room changes or reassignments under the following circumstances:
- If a living unit, floor, or larger unit needs to be closed
for health or safety reasons or converted to serve another purpose that will
benefit the University over the longer term.
- If you are assigned to a First Year Experience section in another building or if a First Year Experience section needs to be relocated to another building.
- At times when student behavior in a section of a residence
hall is judged to be disruptive to the community, all or some students may
be relocated to bring order.
- If you fail to comply with any provision, policy, rule or
regulation.
- If you are a resident of special-purpose housing--such as
Special Interest Housing or an substance-free residence hall--and you fail to
satisfy the requirements of group membership, you may be assigned to a vacant
space elsewhere.
Note: You will not be released from your Student Housing
Agreement in this situation.
- If your roommate cancels his or her housing assignment, you
may be reassigned to make sure that all rooms house the maximum number of
roommate pairs.
Note: You will receive at least 24-hour advance notice of
any reassignment during the academic year.
- If you are assigned to a "specific needs" or ADA room and do not have a documented ADA medical need, you may be reassigned to accommodate a student with documented ADA medical needs.
Mid-year Room Changes
The mid-year room change process is announced at the end of November. Room change
requests for second semester are processed in January. You must complete the
mid-year room change form before the December break. The following apply to
mid-year room changes:
- If You Request a Room Change But Do Not Attend Winter
Session
You must completely vacate your space before leaving at the end of fall semester.
Otherwise, your room change request may not be processed. If you store items
with friends, make sure your belongings do not inconvenience any roommates.
Complete a Check-In/Check-Out form and return your room key before leaving
at the end of the fall semester. If you do not complete this process, the
University will bill you for unnecessary key core changes or damages. When
you return for spring semester, check into your spring semester assignment
if your room change request has been successfully processed. If Housing Assignment
Services cannot process your room change request, check into your fall semester
room assignment when you return for spring semester.
- If You Request a Room Change and Attend Winter Session
When moving, follow the timetable established by Housing Assignment Services.
After vacating your fall assignment, complete a Check-In/Check-Out form and
return your room key to avoid billing charges.
Note: If you are involved in a mid-year room change and fail
to vacate your room on time, your belongings will be moved and stored at your
own risk. In that event, a $20 service charge will be added to your account.
