Buildings that requires the use of an allocator are Dickinson, Gilbert, Harrington and Rodney.
NEW! Due to extremely limited availability of allocators, it is necessary that residents of Dickinson, Rodney, Gilbert and Harrington purchase or rent a combination microwave/refrigerator unit (deadline to rent is August 20). These buildings were not designed for the electrical loads imposed by microwaves. Power failures can occur if separate microwave and refrigerator units are used simultaneously. Combination units featuring built-in allocators may be rented through the Residence Student Association, in conjunction with QPS Marketing. More information on rental units is available by calling (610) 687-5075 or e-mail: sales@qpsmarketing.com.
Refrigerator Policy
One refrigerator, with a maximum
capacity of 4.5 cubic feet (using 120 volts or less and no more than 2.4
amps of power) is permitted in each residence hall room.
Microwave Policy
One microwave using a maximum
of 700 watts is approved for use in each residence hall room. However,
because traditional residence halls* were not designed
for electrical loads imposed by microwaves, they lack the capacity for
separate microwave ovens and refrigerators. A special allocator must be
affixed to these appliances, which automatically shuts off the refrigerator
when the microwave is in use. Students are encouraged to
use community kitchens, where microwave ovens are available for their
convenience.
Combination
refrigerator/microwave units --featuring a built-in allocator
-- may be rented through the Resident Student Association (see information above).
Guidelines for Microwave/Refrigerator
Use and Maintenance: Appliances must carry the approval label of Underwriters'
Laboratories and be connected directly into a wall socket or power strip
with an internal circuit breaker.
Refrigerators, microwaves or
combination units should be positioned to allow ventilation and should
never be placed in closets. Wiring cannot be covered and refrigerators
should be kept free of excessive frost, mold or mildew. Food should be
kept in an airtight containers. Refrigerators should be emptied and unplugged
over extended breaks.
A charge will be assessed if
there is damage to the residence hall room or furnishings as a result
of microwave or refrigerator use.
