Friends. A simple word isn't it? It's uttered every day to almost every person imaginable. Who are your friends? We used to think that friends were the people that you could laugh with and talk to. Now we know that friends aren't that, they're the people who touch your heart. Before joining ALPHA PHI, we thought friendship was simple. Yet, as we began to learn more about Alpha Phi, our notion of friendship grew into something different. Alpha Phi not only encompasses friendship, but also a strong dedication to the principles that we were founded upon in 1972: sisterhood, social involvement in campus activities, and service in the community. Sure, these are just a bunch of words sororities use to define who and what they are, but in Alpha Phi, they are more than just words.
It's not wearing shirts with the same letters that make us sisters. It's living in a house with 50 girls that know and love you. It's knowing what makes each other laugh. It's doing nothing at all and having the best time ever. It's being there for all the big stuff and then everything in between. Like every Monday and Wednesday when we pile in the living room to all watch our favorite reality TV shows. It's having someone who will quiz you before a test and always offer to walk with you home. It's knowing you'll never be alone again because your best friend lives in the next room.
It means making Greek Week the best seven days of your life. It's showing up an hour early for every event so we can perfect our volleyball, dodgeball, and bombardment skills. It's 90 girls on the sidelines cheering so loudly that they can hardly speak the next day, but doing it all again anyway. It's getting up at 7 a.m. to practice Air Band and loving it.
It's getting up early on a Saturday morning to walk for Heart Disease. It's washing cars all day just to raise money for a local animal shelter. It's being involved in campus community service that makes us happy knowing we made others happy.
But no matter what it is that we do… the fun stuff, the hard stuff, the dull stuff, we do it together. And that, to us, is friendship.
